01 · Overview

Ciudad Obregón, in brief

Ciudad Obregón is a city in southern Sonora, Mexico, serving as the municipal seat of Cajeme. Positioned as the state's second largest urban center after Hermosillo, the locality lies 530 km south of the country's northern border.

Geographically, the urban center is situated on the parallel 27–29' north latitude and the meridian 109–59' west longitude, with an altitude above sea level of 40.8 m in the city center. The surrounding landscape places the community 50 km from the coast of the Sea of Cortez and 100 km from the Sierra Madre Occidental. Furthermore, the city is positioned 240 km from Hermosillo.

The landscape of the region is defined by the Yaqui Valley, famously known as the Barn of Mexico due to its highly fertile lands. Irrigation canals constructed around 1910 by the Richardson company, alongside the arrival of the South Pacific Railway in 1906, facilitated the transformation of this valley into a prosperous agricultural region. Because of its relatively recent foundation, the settlement was planned with wide avenues and modern urban development compared to other Sonoran cities. The topography and climate of the area support intensive agricultural activities, livestock, aquaculture, trade, and maquiladora operations, which form the core of the local economy.

The origins of the settlement date back to 1907 when a flag station named Cajeme was established for the locomotive crossing the state to supply water. Following decrees in 1927 and 1928, the town was declared the municipal head and renamed Ciudad Obregón in recognition of the revolutionary leader Álvaro Obregón. Over subsequent decades, the population expanded significantly, reaching 120,000 residents by 1950, and later recording 298,625 inhabitants in the 2010 census, with a broader municipal population of 409,310.

Educational institutions in the area include campuses of the Instituto Tecnológico de Sonora (ITSON), Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Cajeme (ITESCA), Universidad La Salle, Universidad TecMilenio, and the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM). Additional educational infrastructure includes the Universidad Tecnológica del Sur de Sonora, Universidad del Valle de México, Universidad del Desarrollo Professional, and Universidad Vizcaya de las Américas. Detailed historical and geographical data regarding the settlement can be referenced through Ciudad Obregón and GeoNames record for Ciudad Obregón.
