01 · Overview

Ciudad Lázaro Cárdenas, in brief

Southernmost limits

Ciudad Lázaro Cárdenas is a port city located in the southern part of the Mexican state of Michoacán, bordered to the east by Guerrero. Serving as the southernmost municipality in Michoacán, its coordinates place it at 17°57′00″N 102°12′00″W, precisely where the Río Balsas drains into the Pacific Ocean.

From Los Llanitos to a presidential namesake

Originally known as Los Llanitos while forming part of the municipality of Arteaga, the settlement underwent a series of administrative renamings that marked its historical evolution. In 1932, it gained town status and was designated Melchor Ocampo. The state congress subsequently decreed the creation of the municipality of Melchor Ocampo del Balsas on April 12, 1937, during the governorship of José María Mendoza Prado. On November 17, 1970, the municipality changed its name to Lázaro Cárdenas. This shift honored Lázaro Cárdenas del Río, a Michoacán-born politician and former president of Mexico from 1934 to 1940, who had died the previous month.

Industrial friction and maritime trade

The municipality experienced significant labor unrest in 2006 when steelworkers initiated a strike following an explosion at a steel plant that killed 65 workers. The subsequent mobilization of the militia to attack the strikers led to numerous injuries and deaths. Beyond heavy industry, the municipality developed a deepwater seaport capable of handling container, dry bulk, and liquid cargo, alongside automobile exports bound for South America and southeast Asia. By 2012, the port handled 1.24 million TEU, supported by exclusive rail service from Kansas City Southern de México connecting the trade corridor to the interior.
