Taipa

Taipa is an area in Macao, formerly a distinct island from Coloane before being connected to it through the reclaimed land of Cotai. Located on the northern half of the combined island, the district maintains a population of 112,051.

Fishermen and Dynasties

Originally settled around 800 years ago by Hokkien-speaking fishermen, the territory saw most of its early Chinese settlement occur during the Southern Song dynasty. Centuries later, the arrival of Portuguese influence transformed the region's geopolitical layout. In 1847, Lesser Taipa was annexed under the governorship of João Maria Ferreira do Amaral to combat marine outlaws and protect against pirate attacks, followed by the annexation of Greater Taipa in 1851.

Industry and Architecture

For generations, the local economy centered around fishing in a prominent harbour where fishermen congregated. By 1923, the opening of the first firecracker factory spurred an industrial boom that drew many people to the island. As infrastructure expanded with projects like the 1969 Estrada do Istmo causeway and the 1974 Governador Nobre de Carvalho Bridge connecting Taipa to the Macau Peninsula, the population climbed well past its early baseline of 3,000 residents. Following the eventual decline of the firecracker industry and the closure of its last factory in 1984, the old village developed into a tourist destination by the 1990s, drawing visitors with its distinct Portuguese architecture.

Suburban Modernity

Today, the landscape features wide streets set around a grid system within a suburban environment administered largely through the civil parish of Our Lady of Carmo. The local geography is anchored by the 159.1-metre Taipa Grande Hill to the east and Taipa Pequena Hill to the west. Spanning an area of 7.9 square kilometres, the district accommodates significant modern infrastructure, including the Macau International Airport, the Macau Jockey Club, the Macau Stadium, and the University of Macau campus located on Hengqin.
