01 · Overview

Limpertsberg, in brief

Limpertsberg is a district located in north-western Luxembourg City, in the centre of Luxembourg. As of 31 December 2025, Limpertsberg had a population of about 11,593 inhabitants.

Wooded medieval plateau

During the Middle Ages, the area was covered by a forest, first mentioned in 1314 by John the Blind, King of Bohemia and Count of Luxembourg. In the era of the fortress, the agricultural plateau was restricted by military regulations that forbade significant construction and required light wooden buildings in the lower area.

Open spaces and civic landmarks

To the south on the border with the main city sits the Glacis, a large open-air parking lot that hosts the annual Schueberfouer fair, the largest fair in the country. Adjacent to the Glacis stands the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg. Towards the south-east, the iconic Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, recognized by its red color, spans the Alzette river and connects the district to the European district of Kirchberg via the City district of Pfaffenthal.

Remembrance and reflection

The Notre-Dame Cemetery contains the Monument de la résistance et de la déportation and the bronze sculpture titled The Political Prisoner by Lucien Wercollier. The grounds preserve historical memory, including the site where seven rebels of the Kleppelkrich were executed by firing squad on 8 January 1799, followed by their leader Michel Pintz on 20 May of that same year.

Education and community

Modern Limpertsberg functions as an educational hub, housing parts of the University of Luxembourg, the Lycée de garçons, the Lycée Robert Schuman, the Lycée Vauban, the Lycée Technique des Arts et Métiers, the Lycée Technique du Centre, the Lycée Technique Michel Lucius, a French school, and a Waldorf school. Religious life is marked by St Joseph's Roman Catholic church, completed in the Neo-Romanesque style in 1913.
