Zliten is a city in Libya situated within the Murqub District. It has a predominantly Arab population of around 203,790 as of 2025 and lies approximately 175 km east of Tripoli.
Geography and Demography
The settlement covers an area of about 8 square kilometers along the Mediterranean coast, bounded by Misrata to the east, Khoms to the west, and Bani Walid to the south. Spoken languages include Arabic (ar-LY), Italian, and English.
A Historical Turning Point
On Friday, 24 August 2012, the shrine of Sidi Abdul-Salam Al-Asmar Al-Fituri suffered extensive damage at the hands of violent Salafists. Cleric Muhammad al-Madkhali of the Madkhalism movement praised the loyalists who carried out the action and encouraged similar attacks. The incident drew widespread condemnation from the Grand Mufti of Libya, Abdelrahman al-Gharyani, 22 organizations in Libya including Lawyers for Justice in Libya and the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information, and UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.
Education and Economy
Zliten is home to Al-Asmariya Islamic University, featuring faculties of Arts, Sciences, Economics and Political Sciences, Dentistry and Mouth Surgery, and Education, as well as a higher vocational training center covering various engineering fields. Commercial infrastructure includes modern banking institutions, a major shopping center, and the Zliten Hotel.
Industrial activities expanded significantly in the early 2000s. In 2001, the Libyan Government proposed joint venture projects, including a $169 million expansion of the Arab Cement Company plant. By February 2005, an initial public offering sold 60% of the company, which then proposed building a second 1-Mt/yr-capacity cement production line. Additionally, Arab Union Contracting Co. commissioned a 1.2-Mt/yr-capacity cement clinker plant near Zliten, with commercial production beginning in September 2005, and initiated a feasibility study for a second line. Seawater desalination capacity was also extended in 2004 using multi-stage flash distillation.
Cultural Heritage
The city preserves ancient Roman sites such as the coastal Villa of Omira and its mosaics, the Castle in Al-Jumaa, and the Mausoleum and Mosque of Abd As-Salam Al-Asmar, alongside the Mosque of Abu-Minjal and the Mosque of Albaza. The historic Slat Abn Shaif Synagogue, which was over 900 years old and served as a Lag Ba'omer pilgrimage site for Libyan Jews, was destroyed in the 1980s and replaced by apartments.
