01 · Overview

Rēzekne, in brief

Rēzekne is a state city situated in the Rēzekne River valley within the Latgale region of eastern Latvia. Known as The Heart of Latgale, the municipality is built across seven hills and functions as an extraterritorial administrative center.

Seven hills and stone ruins

A Latgalian hill fort stood on the location from the 9th to the 13th centuries until German crusaders of the Livonian Order destroyed it. In 1285, the knights erected a stone fortress on the site to serve as a border post on their eastern frontier, and the name Rēzekne was documented for the first time that same year. Throughout early centuries, the location faced repeated attacks by Russian and Lithuanian forces before passing to the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1559.

The railway transformation

During the 19th century, a critical turning point arrived with the construction of the Moscow–Ventspils and Saint Petersburg–Warsaw railways. This infrastructure converted Rēzekne from a sleepy country town into an important transport hub featuring two stations and accelerating population growth.

Congress and independence

In the spring of 1917, the first Latgalian congress took place in the city, resulting in the declaration that Latgale would unite with other Latvian regions. Following the declaration of independence in 1918, the Latvian War of Independence, and the expulsion of both German and Red armies, the municipality established itself as a cultural center for all of Latgale.

Wartime devastation

World War II brought catastrophic destruction. Troops of German Army Group North captured the municipality on 4 July 1941, operating a Stalag 340 prisoner-of-war camp subcamp. Heavy air-bombing by Soviet forces subsequently reduced two-thirds of the buildings to rubble before troops of the Soviet 2nd Belorussian Front recaptured the area on 27 July 1944. From a pre-war population of 13,300, only 5,000 residents remained.

Post-war reconstruction prioritized industrial output, turning Rēzekne into a prominent manufacturing center within the Latvian SSR with facilities including a lumber mill, the Rebir electric-instrument factory, and a dairy processor known as Rēzeknes Piena konservu kombināts. Today, the settlement maintains a population of 26,429 inhabitants.
