Nakuru

Nakuru is the capital and largest urban center of Nakuru County in Kenya. Situated 1,850 meters above sea level, the city lies along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway at a distance of 160 kilometres from the national capital, Nairobi.

By virtue of its geographical placement within Nakuru County, the settlement is variously regarded as belonging to either the Great Rift Valley region or the Mount Kenya region, holding the position of the largest urban area by population within both territories. The surrounding landscape features prominent geological formations, including the dormant Menengai Crater, which stands as the second largest surviving volcanic crater in the world and plunges 483 metres down from its rim.

The geography of the wider area incorporates several of the Rift Valley lakes. Two kilometres south of the town sits Lake Nakuru, which operates as a soda lake and forms a core part of Lake Nakuru National Park. This protected zone functions as a rhinoceros sanctuary established in 1983, a designated Ramsar site since 1990, and an Important Bird Area since 2009. The park supports over 450 bird species alongside 56 mammal species, including populations of Rothschild's giraffes, and acts as an international feeding site for great white pelicans that nest at nearby Lake Elmenteita. Additional water bodies within Nakuru County include Lake Solai and Lake Naivasha.

Climatically, the area experiences temperate and subtropical highland climates, categorized as Csb, where temperatures drop significantly during the night and throughout the months of June to August. Archaeological significance also marks the local geography, featuring the Hyrax Hill prehistoric site located approximately eight kilometres from the Central Business District, alongside nearby tourist destinations such as Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo in Baringo County.
