01 · Overview

Hamamatsu, in brief

Hamamatsu is a city located in western Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. It serves as the largest city in the prefecture and functions as a member of the World Health Organization's Alliance for Healthy Cities (AFHC).

Declaratives

The area now comprising Hamamatsu has been settled since prehistoric times, with numerous remains from the Jōmon period and Kofun period discovered within the present city limits, including the Shijimizuka site shell mound and the Akamonue Kofun ancient tomb. During the Nara period, the locality became the capital of Tōtōmi Province. In the Sengoku period, Hamamatsu Castle served as the home of future shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The settlement subsequently flourished during the Edo period under a succession of daimyō rulers as a castle town and as a post town on the Tōkaidō highway connecting Edo with Kyoto.

Following the Meiji Restoration, Hamamatsu became a short-lived prefecture from 1871 to 1876 before uniting with Shizuoka Prefecture. Hamamatsu Station opened on the Tōkaidō Main Line in 1889, and the modern municipalities system established Hamamatsu as a town that same year. The municipality was upgraded from a town to a city on July 1, 1911. The twentieth century brought major historical turning points and disruptions, including the Rice riots of 1918, the opening of the Imperial Japanese Army Hamamatsu Air Base in 1926, and the opening of the Imperial Japanese Army Flight School in 1933. Severe destruction struck the city during the Tonankai earthquake on December 7, 1944, followed by extensive devastation from United States air raids in June 1945. Post-war development included the Hamamatsu Incident involving ethnic rioting of Zainichi Korean residents in 1948, alongside widespread municipal mergers that expanded the city boundaries over subsequent decades.

Hamamatsu achieved designation as a core city by the central government on April 1, 1996, and later became a government ordinance-designated city on April 1, 2007. The municipality encompasses a total urban area of 1,558.06 square kilometers and features a diverse geography that includes a flat plain and the Mikatahara Plateau in the south alongside a mountainous area in the north, roughly bordered by Lake Hamana. In September 2023, the city held an estimated population of 780,128 residents across 340,591 households.
