01 · Overview

Ardabīl, in brief

Where is Ardabīl located in northwestern Iran?

Ardabīl is a city situated in northwestern Iran. Serving as the capital of Ardabil Province, Ardabil County, and the Central District, it lies close to the borders of the Republic of Azerbaijan and sits 40 kilometers from the village of Diqo.

Because of its geographical proximity to the Caucasus, the settlement has historically been susceptible to attacks by Caucasian hill peoples and inhabitants of the steppes of the Northern Caucasus. In 730 or 731, Khazars passed through the Alan Gates and fought a clash on the plain outside the town against the forces of the Arab governor of Armenia. During the early Qajar period, crown prince Abbas Mirza governed Ardabil and instructed the Napoleonic general Gardane to fortify the settlement with ramparts. Following the Russo-Persian Wars and the territorial cessions to Russia under the terms of the Treaty of Turkmenchay in 1828, Ardabil was positioned only 40 kilometers from the newly drawn border. This geography allowed the city to function economically as a stop on a major caravan route through which European goods entered Iran from Russia.

The surrounding region has long supported diverse linguistic and cultural elements. According to the Arab geographer al-Maqdisi, who died in 991, seventy languages were spoken around Ardabil, most likely referring to variations of the Adhari language. Topographically and historically linked to trade and border exchanges, the area hosts the Sheikh Safi al-Din Khanegah and Shrine Ensemble, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located within the municipal boundaries.
