01 · Overview

Pontianak, in brief

Pontianak is a city in Indonesia and the capital of the province of West Kalimantan, occupying an area of 118.21 square kilometres in the delta of the Kapuas River. Founded on 23 October 1771 as a trading port around an old trading station on the western coast of Borneo, the city is positioned precisely on the equator, with its center located less than 3 kilometres south of the line, which has earned it the designation of Kota Khatulistiwa or Equatorial City.

A historical turning point for Pontianak occurred during the Second World War when the Dutch East Indies fell under Japanese occupation. During this era, the city became the site of the Pontianak massacre, during which the Imperial Japanese Navy targeted and massacred numerous Malay aristocrats, sultans, and prominent members of other ethnic groups, notably including high-profile Arabs and Chinese individuals, particularly through the Massacre of Mandor. Following the subsequent surrender of Japan, the city underwent a major administrative transformation when it was incorporated into the Republic of Indonesia and formally designated as the capital city of the province of West Kalimantan.

The urban center developed from a small Malay fishing village at the mouth of the Kapuas River where it meets its major tributary, the Landak River, into the seat of the Pontianak Sultanate. It was later incorporated into the Dutch East Indies following an agreement reached between the Pontianak Sultanate and the Dutch Government, serving as the seat of the Residentie Westerafdeeling van Borneo during the colonial period. Demographically, the city had a population of 658,685 at the 2020 Census, and its official population estimate reached 686,019 by mid-2025. Pontianak ranks as the 23rd most populous city in Indonesia and stands as the fourth most populous city on the island of Borneo. The urban population reflects a diverse multicultural composition that includes Dayak, Malay, Bugis, and Chinese residents, alongside various immigrant groups such as Javanese, Madurese, Bataks, Ambon people, Papuans, and Manado people.
