01 · OverviewSark, in brief
Sark
Sark is an island situated in the southwestern English Channel off the coast of Normandy, forming part of the Channel Islands archipelago within the Bailiwick of Guernsey. The settlement features a population of about 500, with most residents living in The Village, which serves as the main administrative center.
Landscape and Climate
The terrain consists of Greater Sark and the southern peninsula of Little Sark, which are joined by a natural, high, and very narrow isthmus named La Coupée. This connecting ridge is 300 feet long and features a drop of 330 feet on each side. The highest point on the island reaches 374 feet above sea level at Le Moulin, where a 1571 windmill stands with sails removed during World War II. Geological formations across the island are made up mainly of amphibolite and granite gneiss rocks, intruded by quartz diorite sheets formed during the Late Pre-Cambrian Age Cadomian Orogeny around 620 to 600 million years ago.
Sea-level cave formations deeply penetrate the island, offering habitats for marine creatures such as sea anemones. Natural features include the Venus Pool and the Adonis Pool located off the south end of Little Sark, where waters are refreshed at high tide. Due to its isolation and environmental conditions, Sark was designated as a Dark Sky Community and the first Dark Sky Island in the world in 2011.
