01 · OverviewTamuning, in brief
Tamuning Overview
Tamuning, also known as Tamuning-Tumon-Harmon and by the Chamorro name Tamuneng, is a village situated on the western shore of the United States territory of Guam. Positioned at coordinates 13.48754 latitude and 144.78143 longitude at an elevation of 13 meters, the municipality operates within the Pacific/Guam timezone with a population of 19,685 residents.
A major historical turning point for the area occurred following an earthquake on January 25, 1849, near Guam, which generated a tsunami that devastated Lamotrek and Satawal. In the aftermath of this disaster, Carolinians settled in the location, giving rise to the Carolinian word Tamuning, which may derive from the clan name of a Carolinian chief. Prior to this settlement, the ancient Chamorro designation for the area was Apurgan or Apotgan, and it was also referred to as Maria Christina during the 19th century. Early in the 2000s, the American administration relocated the Carolinian community to Saipan.
Today, Tamuning serves as the economic core of Guam, featuring the tourist center of Tumon, the Harmon Industrial Park, and commercial districts situated along Marine Corps Drive. The village contains the access roads and the old passenger terminal of Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport, where United Airlines maintains its headquarters and serves as the island's largest single employer with approximately 1,400 jobs. Federal ownership characterizes a large proportion of land across the municipality, which includes the census-designated places of Tamuning, Apotgan, Harmon Industrial Park, Oka, Tumon, and Upper Tumon. The local economy and infrastructure also encompass the Guam Premier Outlets, the Guam International Trade Center Building housing several diplomatic consulates, the Guam Memorial Hospital, and Fort Juan Muña for the Guam Army National Guard. Official administrative and public functions are conducted using the United States Dollar, alongside the English and Chamorro languages, officially recognized as en-GU and ch-GU.
