It is the most populous commune in Guadeloupe, with a population of 53 514.

Les Abymes lies on the western side of the island of Grande‑Terre at latitude 16.273 N and longitude 61.50507 W. The commune is positioned about 3 km north‑east of Pointe‑à‑Pitre, 7 km east of Baie‑Mahault, and 10 km south‑west of Morne‑à‑l’Eau, linking these centres through a network of national routes.
The primary artery is Route nationale N1, which arrives from Baie‑Mahault along the southern border of Les Abymes and continues south as the N4. From the N1 the N5 branches off and cuts north‑east through the centre of the commune toward Morne‑à‑l’Eau. The N11 diverges from the N5 on the south‑east side, loops north‑west and west, and re‑joins the N1. The D106 heads north from the commune to Vieux Bourg, while the Route du Palais Royal runs north‑east to meet the N5 and the Route de Chazeau extends further north‑east to Doubs. Access to the Pointe‑à‑Pitre International Airport is provided via the N11.
Integrated into the urban area of Pointe‑à‑Pitre, Les Abymes forms part of the largest metropolitan zone in Guadeloupe.
