01 · Overview

Peristéri, in brief

City of pigeons, crossroads of voices

Peristéri is a suburban municipality in the western part of the Athens agglomeration, Greece. Its name translates to pigeon or dove in Greek.

Situated about 4 km northwest of central Athens, the city lies between Mount Aigaleo to the northwest and the Cephissus river to the southeast. The municipality spans an area of 10.50 square kilometres, with a built-up area continuous with central Athens and the neighboring suburbs of Aigaleo, Chaidari, Petroupoli, Ilion, and Agioi Anargyroi.

Transportation routes connect the municipality outward. The A1 motorway crosses the southeastern sector, and Athinon Avenue traverses the southwest. Three stations on Athens metro Line 2—Anthoupoli, Peristeri, and Agios Antonios—serve the locality, alongside the Kifissos Bus Terminal at the eastern border handling long-distance routes from the Peloponnese, Epirus, Macedonia, the Ionian Islands, and Thrace.

Cultural life includes one municipal outdoor cinema and four municipal theatres. Athletic traditions are represented by Atromitos in football and the basketball team Peristeri Athens, which plays at the 4,000-seat Peristeri Arena opened in 1989 and named after Andreas Papandreou.

The ancient deme Leuconoe is believed to have stood here. Industrial history includes the 1933 founding of Lignitoryheia Attikis S.A. to exploit local coal deposits, with mining beginning two years later.

Cultural exchange extends internationally through municipal twinning with Iaşi in Romania and Rousse in Bulgaria.

Notable individuals from the area include singers Angela Dimitriou, Giannis Poulopoulos, Grigoris Bithikotsis, and Konstantinos Argiros, alongside athletes and figures such as pole vault champion Nikoleta Kyriakopoulou, basketball players Evangelos Koronios and Vangelis Mantzaris, and brain surgeon Leonidas Michailidis.
