02 · Overview

Takoradi, in brief

Takoradi is a city in Ghana comprising the twin cities of Sekondi and Takoradi. It serves as the capital of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan District and the Western Region of Ghana.

How did the area evolve through trade and colonial influence?

Both cities developed from Dutch and English forts built around the 17th century in the early colonial and trading period. Sekondi, the older and larger of the two towns, was the site of Fort Orange, Fort Witsen, and Fort Sekondi, all built by the Dutch. During this time, British and Dutch traders held powerful influence, creating two corresponding political divisions known as British Sekondi and Dutch Sekondi, which essentially collapsed after the Dutch formally left in 1872.

The region prospered following infrastructure developments. A railway was built in 1903 to transport mineral and timber resources from the hinterland to the coast, and in 1928, Ghana's first deepwater seaport was built in Takoradi. These milestones transformed both cities into important economic sectors in Ghana before they officially merged on December 2, 1946.

What historical turning point occurred during World War II?

During World War II, RAF Takoradi became an important staging point for British aircraft destined for Egypt. Spitfire fighter planes were shipped in crates from England to Takoradi, where they were assembled and flown via Nigeria and Sudan to Libya. Additionally, 26 Squadron SAAF was based in Takoradi during the conflict to fly anti-submarine and convoy protection patrols over the Atlantic.

How does the city function today?

According to the 2021 census, the population of Sekondi-Takoradi stands at 245,382 people. The city operates as an industrial and commercial center within the Western administrative region, with leading industries that include timber, cocoa processing, plywood, shipbuilding, harbour and railway repair, and recently, sweet crude oil and crude oil following the discovery of oil in the region in 2010.
