01 · Overview

Prenzlauer Berg, in brief

Prenzlauer Berg is a locality within the State of Berlin in Germany, forming the southerly and most urban district of the borough of Pankow. Geographically, the administrative unit occupies a position in northeast Berlin with a population totaling 148,878 inhabitants.

Positioned geographically at latitude 52.53878 and longitude 13.42443, the locality shares its borders with Mitte to the west and southwest, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg to the south, Lichtenberg to the east, and Weißensee and Pankow to the north. Geologically, the area straddles the southernmost edge of the Barnim glacial deposit, which formed during the last Ice Age. Historically viewed as a hill by the inhabitants of historic Berlin situated to the south in the glacial valley along the river Spree, the area was widely referred to as Windmill Hill until the 20th century. The highest point within the district reaches an elevation of 91 meters above sea level in the northwest section of Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg. This specific elevation consists of rubble derived from buildings destroyed during World War II by allied air raids and Soviet artillery during the Battle of Berlin.

Developed during the latter half of the 19th century following the 1862 urban planning designs established by James Hobrecht, the district formed part of the Wilhelmine Ring. Urban planning across the locality presents a relatively uniform layout characterized predominantly by five-story, multiple-dwelling units arranged in closed blocks featuring abundant backyards due to long property lots.
