01 · Overview

Lippstadt, in brief

Lippstadt

Lippstadt is a German town located within the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Operating in the Europe/Berlin timezone, the municipality accommodates a resident population of 67,219 individuals.

Geographically positioned in the Lippe valley, the settlement lies approximately 60 kilometres east of Dortmund and 30 kilometres west of Paderborn. The historic centre of the town rests between multiple branches of the river Lippe. Bernhard II zur Lippe originally founded Lippstadt in 1168, and by the early 13th century, the community supported a population of 2,700 people alongside four parish churches. A significant historical turning point occurred in 1524, when the municipality became one of the earliest locations to officially embrace Lutheranism after local Augustinian students brought Martin Luther's doctrines home from the University of Wittenberg.

For centuries, the administrative status of Lippstadt shifted through condominium arrangements and territorial divisions involving the county of Lippe, Cleves-Mark, and Brandenburg/Prussia. This partition ended in 1851 when the entirety of Lippstadt was incorporated into the Prussian royal province of Westphalia. During the 20th century, the town experienced wartime developments, including the establishment of a Buchenwald women's subcamp in 1944. On 1 April 1945, a critical military juncture took place when the United States 2nd Armored Division made contact with the 3rd Armored Division within the city limits, successfully connecting the US Ninth Army with the US First Army while seizing the municipality from scattered resistance.

Today, Lippstadt functions as the largest town in the district of Soest and serves as the corporate headquarters for international automotive suppliers Hella and HBPO Group, as well as Rothe Erde, a manufacturer of large-diameter antifriction bearings and seamless-rolled rings. Transportation infrastructure connects the municipality regionally and nationally via the Bundesstraße 55 and the Hamm-Warburg railway line at the Lippstadt train station. Additional facts and documentation regarding the municipality are cataloged on Wikipedia and through the GeoNames record for Lippstadt.
