01 · Overview

Rustavi, in brief

Rustavi is a city situated in the southeast of Georgia within the Kvemo Kartli region, positioned 20 kilometers south of the national capital, Tbilisi. Home to a population of 128,249, it stands as the third most populous urban center in the country.

The municipality features a distinct architectural and geographical layout shaped by its rapid mid-twentieth-century development along the Kura river valley. Modern Rustavi is divided into multiple distinct zones. Old Rustavi adheres to a Stalinist architectural style and sits on one side of the Rustavi Mtkvari bridge. On the opposite side, New Rustavi is characterized by numerous Soviet-era block apartments. Additional sectors include Azoti, the industrial zone dominated by factories and railway systems, as well as Ialjugis-Pira, a small residential section bordering New Rustavi near the Ialjuga Mountain. The area initially consisted of nearly empty land with temporary lodgings and slums before geologists defined the soil in May 1944 for the construction of major industrial works.

Geographically and administratively, the city operates within the Asia/Tbilisi timezone at a latitude of 41.56271 and a longitude of 44.9787. Its local population communicates in multiple languages, including Georgian, Russian, Armenian, and Azerbaijani, while commercial transactions are conducted using the Georgian Lari, designated by the currency code GEL.
