Rémire-Montjoly, in brief

The Evolution of Rémire-Montjoly

Rémire-Montjoly is a commune situated in French Guiana, an overseas region and department of France located on the northeast coast of South America. Operating within the America/Cayenne timezone and utilizing the EUR currency, the municipality records a population of 19,029 residents at coordinates latitude 4.91667 and longitude -52.26667.

Serving as a suburb located to the south-east of Cayenne—the capital préfecture and largest city of French Guiana—the commune features residential districts positioned along beaches in the Cayenne area. The territory includes the port of Dégrad des Cannes, situated on the estuary of the river Mahury, which functions as French Guiana's main seaport where almost all of the region's imports and exports pass.

The town's historical trajectory reached a major turning point on 27 March 1969, when the name of the commune was officially changed from Remire to Rémire-Montjoly. This administrative alteration was implemented to reflect the development of Montjoly, one of the two settlements located within the commune. Originally founded in October 1652 by missionaries under the Galibi-derived name Armire, the locality later received Dutch Jews fleeing Pernambuco, Brazil in 1656 who established a sugar factory before most departed for Suriname. Jesuits subsequently settled the area in 1666 to operate a sugar plantation until their possessions were ceased in 1765, reducing Remire to a tiny village near Cayenne. Following elevation to a community with its own mayor in 1879, the demographic composition shifted when many people from Martinique settled in the town after the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902. Through subsequent urban expansion, the settlements of Remire and Montjoly fused with Cayenne into a single urban area, though Rémire-Montjoly remains a separately administered commune.

The municipal landscape incorporates historical and natural landmarks, including Fort Diamant, a coastal battery built in 1848 from basalt rubble and bricks to protect Cayenne and the colony. Classified as a historic monument in 1980 and subsequently renovated, the V-shaped structure features walls two metres thick. Additionally, the commune contains Salines de Montjoly, a former saltworks and protected area near the Atlantic Ocean featuring biomes such as sea turtle nesting beaches, bird refuge wetlands, and French Guiana's only publicly accessible mangrove forest. Sporting and cultural dimensions of the municipality are represented by the ASC Rémire football team playing at the Stade Municipal Dr. Edmard Lama, alongside notable figures such as sprinter Loïc Prévot, born in 1998.
