01 · Overview

Lahti, in brief

Lahti is a city in Finland and the regional capital of Päijät-Häme. Positioned in the Finnish Lakeland on a bay at the southern end of lake Vesijärvi, the municipality has a population of 121,622.

A major historical turning point for the locality arrived with the completion of the Riihimäki–Saint Petersburg railway line in 1870 and the Vesijärvi canal in 1871. These transportation routes turned the area into a bustling station where industrial installations rapidly appeared. Even the city coat of arms reflects this heritage, depicting a train wheel surrounded by flames to honor the railway that influenced the settlement's birth at its crossroads.

Although a devastating fire burned almost the entire village to the ground on June 19, 1877, the disaster served as a turning point that spurred authorities to establish a formal town. Emperor Alexander II of Russia granted market town rights in 1878, approving an empire-style grid town plan featuring wide boulevards and a large market square that still forms the basis of the city center. Despite early economic recessions tied to the Russian Empire's war against Turkey and a meagre initial population of roughly 200, local efforts persisted. The Senate approved the application to incorporate as a city in spring 1904, and Tsar Nicholas II issued an ordinance for establishing the city of Lahti.

Growth accelerated through the twentieth century. Large-scale industrial operations and the population surged during the 1930s. Following World War II, the arrival of 10,000 evacuees from ceded territories to the Soviet Union further expanded the municipality, shaping its modern development into a significant urban area within Finland.
