Caravan crossroads

Jimma functions as the largest city in southwestern Oromia Region, Ethiopia. Situated at 7°40′N 36°50′E with a population of 250900, the municipality operates as a special zone of the Oromia Region.

Historically named Hirmata, the northern suburb of Jiren previously served as the capital of the Kingdom of Jimma. During the 19th century, the regional market sustained extensive cultural exchange by drawing thousands of people from neighboring territories. Historical records from observers like Donald Levine document that this marketplace attracted Amhara from Gojjam and Shoa, Oromo from all the Gibe Kingdoms, and numerous representatives of Lacustrine and Omotic groups including Qabena, Kefa, Timbaro, Janjero, Walemo, and Konta. Early 20th-century accounts by German explorer Oscar Neumann noted the region's prosperity under King Abba Jifar II, whose population largely practiced Islam.

Cultural and administrative landscapes shifted further during the 1930s when the Italian colonial regime developed the present town along the Awetu River and established an academy to teach *fiqh*. Following the formal absorption of the kingdom into Ethiopia after the death of Abba Jifar II in 1932, Jimma maintained its role as a regional hub. By the early 1960s, analyst Herbert S. Lewis described it as the greatest market in all of southwestern Ethiopia, capable of attracting up to thirty thousand people during a good day in the dry season.

Modern institutions continue to anchor the municipality. Established in 1968, the Jimma Research Center operates under the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research as the national center for improving the yield of coffee and spices. Higher education and public gatherings converge at Jimma University, alongside the 50,000-capacity Jimma University Stadium.
