01 · Overview

Arba Minch, in brief

What is Arba Minch and where is it located?

Arba Minch, also known as Ganta Garo, is a city and separate woreda situated in the southern part of Ethiopia. The urban center functions as the largest town in the Gamo Zone within the South Ethiopia Regional State, located roughly 500 kilometers south of Addis Ababa at an elevation of 1,285 meters above sea level.

The name Arba Minch translates to 40 Springs, which stems from the local groundwater forest sustained by more than 40 abundant springs. Geographically positioned at the base of the western side of the Great Rift Valley, the municipality comprises the uptown administrative center of Shecha and the downtown commercial and residential area of Sikela, separated by a distance of 4 kilometers and connected by a paved road. Nechisar National Park sits on the eastern side of Sikela, guarding the isthmus situated between Lake Abaya to the north and Lake Chamo to the south, while the Kulfo River flows through the town to drain into Lake Chamo.

How did a historical turning point reshape the settlement?

A major historical turning point for the area occurred in the early 1960s when Fitawrari Aemiro Selassie Abebe, alongside Ganta Kawo Alemayehu Arshe, founded Arba Minch. Following oral tradition, Fitawrari Aemiro Selassie Abebe fought against prominent figures of Chencha to move the provincial capital to Arba Minch. This relocation was designed so that travelers journeying from Gidole to Chencha could take a rest after completing a long, hot crossing through the arid Rift Valley area.

Following this administrative shift, the city successfully superseded Chencha as the provincial capital city of Gamu-Gofa. Infrastructure developments swiftly accompanied this transition. New roads linked the settlement to Soddo, turning Arba Minch into a journey of only a single day by road from the capital of Addis Ababa. Additionally, a telephone line connecting the town to the capital, which cost E$ 250,000, was turned up on July 15, 1967.

Over subsequent decades, the town continued to evolve as an administrative and economic hub, serving as a capital for various jurisdictions including Gamo Gofa Province, North Omo Zone, Kilil 9, and Gamo Gofa Zone, before holding its current status as the capital city of Gamo Zone. The population reached 40,020 residents according to the 1994 national census, and expanded to 74,879 residents during the 2007 census.
