01 · Overview

Calarcá, in brief

Where is Calarcá located within the Colombian landscape?

Calarcá is a municipality situated in the eastern part of the Quindío Department in Colombia. Positioned 4 km east of Armenia, the departmental capital, the city lies in the Andean zone flanking the Central Cordillera within the centre-western region of the country, an area widely recognized as the Eje Cafetero or Coffee Axis. Its geographic coordinates place the inner city at 4° 33’ 0.6” north and 75° 39’ 00” west.

The municipal territory spans a total area of 219.23 km2, divided into an urban area of 2.44 km2 and a rural area of 216.79 km2. Because of this mountainous Andean positioning, the terrain experiences dramatic elevation changes. The altitude varies from 1,000 meters above sea level at the confluence of the Quindío and Barragán rivers up to 3,667 meters above sea level at the El Campanario highland area. The municipality is bordered by Salento to the north, Cajamarca in Tolima to the east, Córdoba, Buenavista, and Pijao in Quindío alongside Caicedonia in Valle del Cauca to the south, and La Tebaida and Armenia to the west.

What climate characterizes this Andean region?

The municipality experiences a subtropical highland climate. This atmospheric pattern supports the rich surrounding ecosystem of the Colombian coffee growing axis, which was designated as part of the Coffee Cultural Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

The varied landscape also features distinctive geological formations, most notably Peñas Blancas. Located on the western slopes of the Central Cordillera near the city, this characteristic mountain consists of a crag and three vertical rock faces. Its bright white color stems from the presence of calcite and limestone, housing various solutional caves and rock shelters inside the cliff where indigenous legend places historical conflicts involving the Pijaos Tribe and chief Calarcá.
