01 · Overview

Zhoucun, in brief

Overview of Zhoucun

Zhoucun is a city situated in China, operating within the Asia/Shanghai timezone at coordinates 36.81667 and 117.81667, utilizing CNY as its currency. As a district in Zibo, Shandong Province, China, the territory covers 307 km2 (119 sq mi) and recorded a population figure of 122,402, alongside an estimated population of 288,440 in 2013.

Languages utilized across the country include zh-CN, yue, wuu, dta, ug, and za. The main industry of Zhoucun district focuses on textiles and furniture manufacture. Historical records note that in the 17th century, the textile industry flourished while the local government established a department called 二公衙门 for extorting money through high taxes, causing merchants to leave. Huahsi Lee, from the Ministry of Justice of the Qing Government, returned to visit family, grew outraged, and reported the economic state to Emperor Shunzhi. Following a compromise where Zhoucun took only one day off the tax, Huahsi built a monument with 今日无税 (No Tax Today) carvings under ambiguous imperial command. Huahsi later undertook the taxes himself and promised reparation from his family for anyone robbed within 200 Li around Zhoucun, maintaining this for seven generations or about 200 years. This monument remains at the center of the relics called 周村大街.

Cultural presence in the district extends to the center of the commercial district, which features a recently refurbished area containing traditional buildings. Additionally, portions of the filming for Zhang Yimou's film To Live occurred within the district. Administratively, Zhoucun district is divided into 5 subdistricts and 4 towns. Further documentation for the region is available via GeoNames and Wikipedia.
