01 · OverviewZhongxiang, in brief
Zhongxiang is a county-level city located in the central part of Hubei province, China, governed under Jingmen and situated along the middle reaches of the Han River. Spanning 4,488 square kilometres, the municipality supports a population of 108,883 residents and features a humid subtropical climate.
Ancient roots
As a recognized cradle of Chu culture, the territory served historically as an alternate capital of the Chu state during the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period. Centuries later, the political landscape transformed when the Jiajing Emperor, who ruled from 1521 to 1566, rose to the throne. Because he had been born and lived locally, the municipality—then the location of the Chengtian Prefecture Government Office—was designated as one of three major prefectures governed directly by the central government. The Jiajing Emperor formally bestowed the name Zhongxiang, which signifies Blessed with propitious omen, upon the region during the Ming dynasty.
Imperial transformation
The ascension of the Jiajing Emperor marked a definitive historical turning point for the locality through grand imperial construction and controversial ancestral honors. The emperor retroactively styled his late father, Zhu Youyuan, as the Gongruixian Emperor and elevated his mother to the status of Zhangsheng empress dowager. Both parents were interred at the Xianling Tomb, a sumptuous mausoleum complex situated northeast of the city. A massive imperial estate controlled a significant portion of the prefecture during this era, overseen by the same eunuch tasked with safeguarding the burial grounds. The Xianling Tomb endures as a prominent landmark and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 2000 as a component of the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Administrative and industrial scope
Administratively equal to a county, Zhongxiang is divided into 17 township-level divisions comprising 1 subdistrict, 15 towns, and 1 township. Following the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, population shifts brought new residents from the Gaoyang area into the municipality. Modern economic activity relies on an established industrial structure encompassing machinery, building materials, chemicals, light industry, textiles, and food production.
