01 · Overview

Xiangtan, in brief

Xiangtan is a prefecture-level city situated in east-central Hunan province within south-central China. It occupies a location on the lower reaches of the Xiang River and forms part of the Changzhutan City Cluster inside the Greater Changsha Metropolitan Region.

Human presence in the region dates back to the 3rd millennium BC, supported by archaeological relics from the Daxi culture, Shang dynasty bronzewares, and Warring States period tombs. During the Eastern Wu kingdom of the Three Kingdoms period, a city was constructed in the west of modern Xiangtan and organized into the Hengyang Commandery. The Tang dynasty formally organized the territory as Xiangtan County in 749, centered near the modern Yisu River. By the Northern Song dynasty, access to land and water trade routes elevated the location into a major regional commercial hub. The Ming and Qing dynasties brought further prosperity grounded in trade for rice and traditional Chinese medicinal ingredients, earning the municipality titles such as Little Nanjing and Golden Xiangtan. Prior to the Second Opium War, the settlement functioned as a primary transfer point for import and export goods moving to and from Canton, Shanghai, and Wuhan, backed by an approximate population of 200,000 inhabitants.

The municipal administration encompasses two districts, two county-level cities, and one county: Yuetang District, Yuhu District, Shaoshan City, Xiangxiang City, and Xiangtan County. The 2010 census recorded a total population of 2,748,552 inhabitants across Xiangtan, with 1,877,919 residents living in the built-up area comprising the two urban districts and Xiangtan County. The geographic etymology connects the character Xiang to the Xiang River, while Tan denotes a deep pool or current eddy, with theories linking the name to local geography and the ancient Zhao Eddy.

Xiangtan holds historical significance as the hometown of several founding leaders of the Chinese Communist Party, including Chairman Mao Zedong, President Liu Shaoqi, and Marshal Peng Dehuai. The administrative area is also the birthplace of Qing dynasty and republic era painter Qi Baishi, scholar-general Zeng Guofan, and tennis player Peng Shuai. Recognized on the Nature Index as one of the top 200 cities globally for scientific research outputs, the city hosts academic institutions including Xiangtan University, the Hunan Institute of Engineering, and the Hunan University of Science and Technology.
