01 · OverviewShanwei, in brief
Shanwei is a resort city located in the eastern portion of Guangdong province, China. Positioned looking out to the South China Sea, the city borders Huizhou to the west, Meizhou and Heyuan to the north, and Jieyang to the east, lying approximately 120 kilometres east of Shenzhen.
Cultural exchange and linguistic diversity shape the daily environment of Shanwei. The dominant ethnic population is Hoklo, who arrived following a large decrease in population caused by warfare in the early Qing dynasty. Most locals speak the Haifeng dialect, a variety of Southern Min that belongs to the Southern Min division of Min Chinese and is similar to Hokkien and Teochew. Meanwhile, most parts of rural Luhe county use the rural Hakka Chinese language belonging to the Xinhui subdialect of the Yuetai dialect. Because the city is near the Pearl River Delta and Hong Kong, population movements within Guangdong province and the influence of television programs from Hong Kong have enabled many local residents, particularly the younger generation, to develop communication skills in Cantonese.
As a popular tourist destination, the municipality draws visitors through its long coastline and distinct local customs. Key points of interest that reflect the region's cultural heritage include the Lufeng Jieshi Xuanwu Mountain Tourist Area, the Shanwei Fengshan Ancestral Temple Tourist Area, the Red Bay Tourist Area, the Haifeng Lotus Mountain Resort, the Tongdingshan Tourist Area, the Haifeng Red Palace Red Square Former Residence, the Peng Pai Martyr's Former Residence, the Shuide Mountain Tourist Resort, the Luhe Luodong Shiwai Meiyuan Tourist Area, and the Lufeng Fushan Mazu Tourist Area.
