Ningde

Coastal fringe, mountain heart

Ningde is a city in Fujian province, China, situated along the northeastern coast of the province. It borders Fuzhou to the south, Wenzhou of Zhejiang to the north, and Nanping to the west.

Landscape of sea and stone

The prefecture spans roughly 13,500 square kilometres, with almost 200 kilometres of coastline opening onto the East China Sea and a rugged interior where mountains dominate the horizon. Four of its administrative divisions lie on the coast while the remaining districts and counties cling to the highlands.

Warm, moist climate

Located about 300 kilometres north of the Tropic of Cancer, Ningde enjoys a warm and humid climate that nurtures fertile soils and abundant rainfall, creating ideal conditions for both agriculture and forest growth.

Forests and bamboo

By the end of 1999, forests covered 8,482 square kilometres—about 65.2 percent of the prefecture—providing a lush backdrop for villages and towns. Bamboo groves alone occupied 600 square kilometres, delivering six million bamboo products each year, with Fu’an’s green bamboo base extending over 34 square kilometres.

Tea, mushrooms, and fruit

The moist climate fuels a thriving agricultural sector. Tea plantations stretched across 463 square kilometres, accounting for 10.5 percent of China’s green‑tea output and supporting more than 1.2 million jobs. Mushroom farms and orchards also flourish, producing shaddocks, Chinese chestnuts, plums, honey peaches, lychees and longans.

Aquaculture on shallow seas

Vast shallow waters along the coast support intensive aquaculture. In 2000, aquatic products represented 41.3 percent of the region’s agricultural value, with exports worth US$82.17 million and a net income for fishermen exceeding RMB 3,500. Key species include yellow croakers, oysters, razor clams, prawns and freshwater eels.

Minerals, metal, and power

Ningde’s geology supplies granite, diorite and basalt, while abundant hydropower underpins metallurgical industries that produce magnesium, zirconium oxide, aluminum and high‑purity silicon carbide. The Ningde Nuclear Power Plant began operation in 2008, and the CFR‑600 reactor is under construction in Xiapu county.

Shipbuilding and batteries

Traditional shipyards now construct vessels up to 10,000 tons, and the region’s battery sector, led by CATL, is expanding rapidly, adding a modern high‑tech dimension to the local economy.

Environmental standing

In the 2016 China Integrated City Index, Ningde ranked No. 2 for environmental performance, reflecting the combined benefits of its coastal breezes, forest cover and clean‑energy initiatives.
