01 · OverviewDunhuang, in brief
Dunhuang is a county-level city situated in northwestern Gansu Province, Northwestern China. The city functions as an oasis containing Crescent Lake and the Singing Sand Dunes, with a recorded population of 186,027 according to the 2010 Chinese census.
Blazing beacons in the desert
Before the third century BC, the region was dominated by the Xiongnu. A major historical turning point arrived in 121 BC when Emperor Wu defeated the Xiongnu, bringing the territory under Chinese rule and fundamentally altering the geopolitics of the frontier.
Following this conquest, the region transformed from a nomadic domain into an imperial stronghold. Emperor Wu established Dunhuang as one of four frontier garrison towns, alongside Jiuquan, Zhangye, and Wuwei. Authorities erected fortifications, dispatched settlers, and extended the Great Wall toward the desert while setting up a line of fortified beacon towers.
The very name Dunhuang, meaning Blazing Beacon, preserves the memory of the watchtowers lit to warn against attacks by marauding nomadic tribes. Positioned at the western end of the Hexi Corridor near the historic junction of the Northern and Southern Silk Roads, the commandery was likely established shortly after 104 BC.
Gateway to the Silk Road
By the second century AD, the population exceeded 76,000. Dunhuang evolved into a critical supply base where caravans bound for arduous desert treks loaded up on food and water, while travelers arriving from the west found sanctuary behind its walls. The heavy flow of traffic fueled lasting prosperity, marked visually by the hewing of the first Buddhist caves in the area in 353, paving the way for the creation of the nearby Mogao Caves.
