Arica

Arica is a commune and port city located in the Arica y Parinacota Region of northern Chile. Situated only 18 km south of the border with Peru, it functions as the capital of both the Arica Province and its surrounding region.

Archaeological evidence demonstrates that native groups inhabited Arica dating back 10,000 years, establishing the earliest known culture to practice mummification. Spaniards settled the land under captain Lucas Martinez de Begazo in 1541, and by 1545 the area functioned as a main export entrepôt for Bolivian silver originating from Potosí. Consequently, the settlement became a prime target for pirates and privateers.

Following the collapse of Spanish rule, the territory fell under Peruvian administration in 1821. Chile seized the city in 1880 during the War of the Pacific, and Peru officially recognized Chilean sovereignty in 1929. Decades later, the Chilean Government established the Junta de Adelanto de Arica in 1958 to promote regional industries through tax incentives. More recently, President Michelle Bachelet promulgated Law 20.175 in Arica on March 23, 2007, creating the Arica and Parinacota Region later that year.

Its strategic regional connectivity is reinforced by the Pan-American Highway, rail links connecting the port to Tacna in Peru and La Paz in Bolivia, and an international airport.
