01 · Overview

Bambari, in brief

Bambari is a town in the Central African Republic.

It sits on the Ouaka River within the Ouaka prefecture, at latitude 5.76795 and longitude 20.67565.

Electric Dawn

The town received electricity in 1970, marking the first major infrastructural shift that linked its market activities to the wider national grid.

Flames of Conflict

On 23 December 2012 rebels from the Séléka coalition seized Bambari, initiating a decade of contested control. A later assault on 24 June 2014 by 100 Anti‑Balaka fighters left 46 dead and 28 wounded, deepening the division of the town along the Oukana River.

By 2015 the western side of the river was held by Anti‑Balaka forces while ex‑Séléka groups dominated the east. The pattern of attacks continued: on 10 January 2019 UPC rebels launched an offensive that lasted seven days before government and international troops repelled it, killing more than 40 insurgents.

Clashes resurfaced on 8 December 2020 between FACA and UPC rebels, leading to a brief UPC occupation on 22 December. The rebels withdrew the next day, returned later, and finally relinquished control when government forces fully recaptured Bambari on 18 February 2021.

Market Pulse

Despite turmoil, Bambari remains a vital market hub, serving surrounding agricultural communities and hosting the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bambari. The town’s airport provides limited air links, supporting both civilian travel and humanitarian logistics.

Iron Horizons

Large iron‑ore deposits lie nearby, including sites at Bakala. Exploitation is hindered by the roughly 1 500 km distance to the nearest sea port, a challenge that would require a heavy‑duty railway and deep‑water facilities in a neighboring country.
