01 · History

How Fort McMurray took shape

Fort McMurray is an urban service area situated in northeast Alberta, Canada, within the middle of the Athabasca oil sands and surrounded by boreal forest. The community has played a significant role in the development of the national petroleum industry.

A Historical Turning Point in Oil Development

A major historical turning point for the community arrived in 1967 with the opening of the Great Canadian Oil Sands plant, now known as Suncor. Following this opening, local population growth took off rapidly. Additional oil sands plants subsequently opened, propelled further by the 1973 oil crisis and the 1979 energy crisis, which featured political tensions and conflicts in the Middle East that triggered severe oil price spikes. The population climbed dramatically from 6,847 residents in 1971 to 31,000 by 1981, occurring just a year after the community incorporated as a city. Although a subsequent oil price collapse in 1986 slowed oil sands production and caused population declines, later price increases following 2003 revived profitability and extraction for about a decade until new slumps occurred.

02 · Overview

Fort McMurray, in brief

Fort McMurray is an urban service area situated in northeast Alberta, Canada, surrounded by boreal forest in the middle of the Athabasca oil sands. The community has played a significant role in the development of the national petroleum industry, notably recording a population of 66,573 in the 2016 federal census.

Historically, the area was dominated by the Cree before European arrival in the late 18th century, with locals utilizing surface deposits of the Athabasca oil sands to waterproof canoes. Peter Pond arrived in the region in 1778 in search of furs, and Alexander MacKenzie made the first recorded description of the oil sands in 1790. A trading post was established at the confluence of the Clearwater and Athabasca rivers, and by 1870 the Hudson's Bay Company post of Fort McMurray was named for Chief Factor William McMurray. The arrival of the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway in 1915 added a crucial transportation link to existing steamboat service.

A major historical turning point occurred in the mid-20th century with the launch of industrial extraction. By the 1930s, Abasands Oil successfully extracted oil from the sands using hot water extraction, and processing output expanded to over 1,100 barrels per day by World War II. The opening of the Great Canadian Oil Sands plant in 1967 catalyzed rapid growth, which accelerated further during the oil price spikes triggered by the 1973 oil crisis and the 1979 energy crisis. Following incorporation as a city in 1980, the population climbed to 31,000 by 1981 and peaked near 37,000 in 1985 before a 1986 oil price collapse slowed production and reduced the population. On April 1, 1995, Fort McMurray amalgamated with Improvement District No. 143 to form the Municipality of Wood Buffalo, ending its official status as a city and designating it as an urban service area.
