01 · Overview

Fleetwood, in brief

Fleetwood is a coastal town located in the Borough of Wyre in Lancashire, England, positioned at the northwest corner of the Fylde. The settlement recorded a population of 26,232 residents at the 2021 census.

The historical turning point for the town occurred during the 1830s, when principal landowner, High Sheriff, and Member of Parliament Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood devised an ambitious redevelopment scheme to transform the area into a bustling seaport and railway spur. To manifest this vision, he engaged Victorian architect Decimus Burton to lay out the first planned town of the Victorian era, utilizing a distinctive half-wheel street design focused on a landscaped sand-dune known as the Mount. Although initial transport terminus schemes failed to materialise, the town subsequently experienced massive expansion throughout the first half of the 20th century, driven by the growth of the fishing industry and passenger ferries to the Isle of Man, which firmly established Fleetwood as a deep-sea fishing port.

A subsequent historical shift began in the 1960s with the decline of the fishing industry, accelerated significantly by the Cod Wars with Iceland. Despite the severe economic contraction that followed—including the loss of approximately 8,000 jobs tied to the demise of fishing and additional job losses from the closure of the ICI Hillhouse works—fish processing remains a major economic activity. Today, the most significant employer in the area is Lofthouse of Fleetwood, the manufacturer of Fisherman's Friend lozenges, which are exported around the world.

For further details regarding the town, comprehensive historical and geographical records are available.
