01 · Overview

Chicoutimi, in brief

Chicoutimi is the most populous borough of the city of Saguenay in Quebec, Canada. Situated at the confluence of the Saguenay and Chicoutimi rivers, the borough recorded a population of 69,004 at the 2021 census.

Historically established in 1676 as a fur trading post by French colonists, the area evolved into a significant commercial and administrative hub for the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. The arrival of the Canadian National Railway in 1893 spurred the growth of pulp and paper operations, leading to the establishment of the Chicoutimi Pulp Co. in 1896. By 1910, the local mill became the largest producer of mechanical pulp in Canada. Educational and cultural institutions emerged over subsequent decades, including the Conservatoire de musique de Saguenay in 1967 and the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi in 1969. Following municipal reorganizations that included a 1976 annexation of neighbouring towns, Chicoutimi merged into the newly formed city of Saguenay in 2002.

Geographically, Chicoutimi sits on the western end of the Saguenay Fjord, primarily occupying the south shore of the Saguenay River. The present-day economy of the borough is supported by its commercial and administrative infrastructure, which includes a large UPS facility serving the greater Quebec area. Additional commercial activity is anchored by regional manufacturing entities such as Cycles Devinci, which began operations in the area in 1987. As the geographical centre of Saguenay, the borough forms the heart of the fifth-largest urban area in the province of Quebec.
