01 · Overview

Brampton, in brief

Brampton is a city located in the Canadian province of Ontario with a population of 656,480. Positioned at coordinates 43.68341 latitude and -79.76633 longitude within the America/Toronto timezone, it operates as a lower-tier municipality and the regional seat of the Regional Municipality of Peel.

Where is Brampton situated geographically?

Brampton sits within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and functions as the third most populous city in the Greater Golden Horseshoe urban area, trailing only Toronto and Mississauga. Within the Peel Region, the municipality shares its borders with several surrounding communities. Vaughan lies directly to the east, while Halton Hills is situated to the west. To the north, the city is bordered by Caledon, and Mississauga forms the southern boundary. Additionally, Etobicoke, which is part of Toronto, is located to the southeast.

What natural features define the local geography?

Historically, the area relied on shallow wells and natural water sources for early residential and commercial needs. Government-appointed water commissioners identified Snell's Lake, now known as Heart Lake and named after a former property owner, approximately 5 kilometers north of town as a viable water source. A pipeline was constructed from Heart Lake to supply the community, and a filtration plant was established south of the lake at present-day White Spruce Park. Today, Heart Lake serves as the central feature of the Heart Lake Conservation Area.

The modern municipality was shaped by an amalgamation of surrounding townships and communities, including the incorporation of Chinguacousy and Toronto Gore in 1974. Outlying communities subsequently integrated into the city limits include Bramalea, Heart Lake, Professor's Lake, Snelgrove, Tullamore, and Marysfield, alongside the development of the Springdale area and expansion extending northward toward the border with Caledon along Mayfield Road.
