01 · Overview

Dschang, in brief

Highland ground

Dschang is a city situated in the West Province of Cameroon. The municipality serves as the capital of the Ménoua division, holding a population of 99,582 residents within the Africa/Douala time zone.

Historically, the land where the settlement now exists was an area contested between two bordering chiefdoms, leading to a name that translates to dispute in the local language. German forces invaded the area in 1895, and the location later functioned as the capital of a German military district starting in 1909. Following World War I, France took control of the region and designated Dschang as the capital of the West Province, subsequently developing a vacation resort in the 1940s.

Positioned at an elevation of 1380 meters, the municipality is characterized by relatively cool temperatures and attractive scenery. Because of this specific terrain, the settlement has long operated as a mountain tourist resort and an important agricultural center, with pig production playing a major role in the local economy. Nearby deposits of the aluminum-bearing ore bauxite have been identified, though a lack of infrastructure has prevented full-scale mining operations.

Transportation to the town is maintained via year-round trafficable dust roads and asphalt roads, alongside bus connections linking the area to Bafoussam and Yaoundé, in addition to an airstrip. The official languages used across the country are English and French, while the predominant local population mainly speaks the Yemba language, a Bamileke language belonging to the predominant Bamiléké ethnic tribe of the region.
