01 · History

How Mindelo took shape

Mindelo is a port city located in the northern part of the island of São Vicente in Cabo Verde. Positioned on the Porto Grande Bay, a large natural harbour, the settlement is surrounded by low mountains including Monte Cara and the Morro Branco headland to the west, and Monte Verde to the east, while the river Ribeira de Julião crosses the town.

Founded by the Portuguese in 1793 as Nossa Senhora da Luz and later renamed Leopoldina around 1820, the site took the name Mindelo in 1838 following the 1832 Landing at Mindelo. The locality grew into a coal deposit for ships of the British East India Company in 1838, and subsequently for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in 1850. Official status advanced when the settlement became a town in 1858 with 1,400 inhabitants, and attained city status in 1879 with 3,717 inhabitants. In 1884, a submarine communications cable linked Europe, Africa, India, and North America here, cementing its role as an important communications centre for the British Empire.

Transatlantic navigation importance declined in the early 20th century due to shifting fuels from coal to oil, competing ports like Dakar and the Canary Islands, and a lack of infrastructure investment. Economic distress sparked strikes between 1910 and 1940, culminating in street riots on 7 June 1934 caused by poverty and unemployment. Prolonged drought, soil erosion, and overgrazing brought famine between 1940 and 1958, leading to widespread mortality and emigration across the archipelago while Mindelo continued to grow by attracting immigrants from nearby Santo Antão.
