01 · OverviewTelisai, in brief
Coastal crossroads
Telisai, also known as Kampong Telisai, is a coastal village situated in the Tutong District of Brunei. Located approximately 17 kilometres from the district town of Pekan Tutong, this settlement encompasses the public housing area STKRJ Kampong Telisai and lies within Mukim Telisai.
Historically, the area functioned as a vital resting place and temporary stop for travelers journeying along the coast from places such as Tutong, Seria, Belait, and the city. In past times, journeys lasted three to four days or even up to a week during low water conditions and forest travel. Fishermen from Kuala Tutong and Kuala Sungai Penyatang utilized the location as a focal point when going to or returning from fishing expeditions.
Cultural exchange historically defined the locale through the production and trade of traditional salt known as Garam Takang, Sira Takang, or Uson Takang in the Dusun dialect. Residents produced this salt by burning beach logs, sprinkling the resulting material with seawater, and cooking the dust until it froze into salt. Villagers from Telisai and other areas gathered in an open area beneath a surviving tree called Pokok Telisai to trade daily items. Under the wide and lush leaves of this tree, people took shelter from the heat and exchanged Garam Takang for necessities such as rice, sago, vegetables, and fish.
Demographically, the village and Danau have associations with the Dusun people. Following the construction of the Skim Perumahan Perpindahan Rakyat Jati Kampong Telisai, the population evolved into a plural society comprising the Dusun, Tutong, Kedayan, Brunei, and other tribes from different districts. The majority of the population consists of Muslims inheriting their faith across generations, alongside individuals who have embraced Islam and a few remaining family groups.
Administered across the Central Telisai and Telisai Pantai areas, the locality houses public infrastructure including a mosque, primary school, police post, post office, and government clinic. The Telisai Pantai area features the Tumpuan Telisai Recreational Park, marked by a replica watermelon structure known as Sekoi at the junction road, serving as a leisure site for youth and residents.
