01 · Overview

Viamão, in brief

Overview of Viamão

Viamão is a municipality situated in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Geographically positioned at latitude -30.08111 and longitude -51.02333 within the America/Sao_Paulo timezone, the city maintains a population of 231,996 residents. In terms of physical scale, Viamão stands as the largest municipality located within the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre and ranks as the seventh most populous throughout the state.

The municipality carries historical importance rooted in cultural exchange and early trade routes. During the 18th century, the regional territory functioned as an active trade corridor connecting Sorocaba and Colônia do Sacramento. Colonists established plantations and cattle ranches here, paving the way for economic growth driven by commerce and the transport of leather and dried meat—known as charque—toward Laguna and São Paulo. The starting point for three major historical commercial routes was located right where Viamão sits today, including the main road known as the Estrada Real.

Cultural exchange and historical heritage are further preserved through landmarks such as the church of the Immaculate Conception, built between 1766 and 1769 at the Estância Grande site established by Francisco Carvalho da Cunha. Designated as a National Heritage site, this structure represents the second oldest church in the state, featuring a severe colonial baroque exterior alongside splendid rococo altars inside.

The area also embraces natural landscapes and parks that bear connections to historical figures and travelers. Saint-Hilaire Park takes its name from the famous traveler Augustin Saint-Hilaire, who journeyed through Rio Grande do Sul to document regional customs and natural aspects. Additionally, the municipality encompasses the 5,566-hectare (13,750-acre) Itapuã State Park, which was created in 1991.
