01 · Overview

Santo André, in brief

Santo André is a Brazilian municipality positioned within the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo and forms part of the ABC Region. The city spans an area of 175.8 square kilometers, equating to 67.9 square miles or about 43,441 acres of landmass, with a population estimated at 778,711 according to the 2024 census.

A major historical turning point occurred in 1938 when a town bearing the name of Santo André emerged anew. This happened when the headquarters of the municipality of São Bernardo transferred near the district of Santo André close to a train station established in 1867 by the São Paulo Railway Company. Prior to that development, the region's initial settlement was founded by João Ramalho in 1553 as Santo André da Borda do Campo, only for governor-general Mem de Sá to order the transfer of its inhabitants in 1560 toward the Jesuit college of São Paulo for a more secure location. Following its 1938 recreation, the town experienced rapid growth beginning in the 1930s and later became the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santo André in 1954.

Today, the municipality functions as an industrial hub encompassing sectors such as chemical engineering, textiles, oil, metal products, metallurgy, and printed matter, alongside districts like Paranapiacaba, Utinga, and Capuava. Despite its heavy industrial base, more than sixty percent of Santo André's total area remains protected by environmental water laws, predominantly centered in the district of Paranapiacaba. Recognized by the UN as the 15th most developed city in Brazil and the eighth most developed in the State of São Paulo, Santo André is also ranked as the fifth best city nationwide for raising children based on public and private education and health care standards.
