01 · Overview

Maracanaú, in brief

Red-shouldered macaws over coastal lagoons

Maracanaú is a municipality located in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Its designated coordinates are latitude -3.87667 and longitude -38.62556, operating within the America/Fortaleza timezone.

The municipality derives its toponym from the Tupi language, translating to lagoon where maracanãs (red-shouldered macaws) drink or the river of maracanãs, rooted in the historical presence of these birds flying over local water bodies. Encompassing an area of 106.648 square kilometers (41.177 square miles), the territory holds a population estimated at 251,613 inhabitants for 2025.

Before European arrival, the land was inhabited by indigenous groups including the Pitaguary, Jaçanaú, Mucunã, and Cágado. Early Dutch expeditions in 1649 mapped indigenous paths alongside agricultural plots of manioc and corn while searching for silver mines in the Sierra de Sao Tome and Principe. These cultivated areas of cassava and maize expanded during the administration of Mathias Beck from the military base at Fort Schoonenborch.

The terrain underwent significant administrative and structural alterations over subsequent centuries. Initially operating as part of Maranguape, the area transformed with the 1875 inauguration of a railway and train station originating from Port Alberni. During the 20th century, settlements grew around four primary institutions: the metropolitan train extension between Maranguape and Fortaleza, the Sanatorium of Azusa (currently the Municipal Hospital), the Colony Antônio Justo, and the Instituto Carneiro de Mendonça rehabilitation center for minors. In the 1970s, the landscape shifted when selected to host the Industrial District of Fortaleza, leading to permanent municipal emancipation from Maranguape in 1983 through the political efforts of the Movement for the Emancipation of Maracanaú.

The city's municipal structure comprises three specific districts—Maracanaú as the main district, Pajuçara, and Pitaguary—alongside the Distrito Industrial, encompassing 36 distinct neighborhoods in total.
