History

Guarulhos is a city and municipality in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, Brazil. It is the second‑most populous city in the state of São Paulo and the 13th‑most populous in the country.

Founded on 8 December 1560 by Jesuit priest Manuel de Paiva, the settlement was originally called Nossa Senhora da Conceição and served as a defensive outpost for five small villages protecting the boundaries of São Paulo de Piratininga against the Tamoios tribe. In the 16th century the town lay between the Tietê River to the south and the Cabuçu de Cima River to the west, a strategic position that later shaped its urban expansion.

Guarulhos separated from São Paulo in 1880 under the name Nossa Senhora da Conceição dos Guarulhos; the current name was adopted after law #1.021 on 6 November 1906. The early 20th century brought the railway, electric lighting, telephone lines and industrial licences, spurring rapid demographic growth—from 35 000 residents in 1950 to over half a million by 1980.

The 1930s saw the city caught in the Federal Intervention and the Constitutional Movement that ended Brazil’s “Old Republic.” Public institutions followed: the Monteiro Lobato Municipal Library (1940), the first Health Center (1941), and the Holy House of Mercy (1950s). In 1945 the São Paulo Air Force Base moved to the Cumbica neighbourhood, and in 1985 the Cumbica Airport opened, later renamed International Airport of São Paulo–Guarulhos Governor André Franco Montoro, the second‑largest airport in Latin America.
