02 · Overview

Dom Eliseu, in brief

Dom Eliseu is a municipality located in the state of Pará within the Northern region of Brazil. Situated at an altitude of 180 meters on a flat surface, the locality functions as a dynamic trading post in the southeast region of Pará.

Territorial occupation of the area began during the 1960s with the opening of the BR-010 highway during the administration of Brazilian President Juscelino Kubitschek. Shortly after, governor Alacid da Silva Nunes ordered the construction of the PA-70 highway, now designated as the BR-222. The intersection of highways BR-010 and PA-70 became known as Quilometro Zero. A warehouse and restaurant established by Leopoldo da Cunha at this junction formed the earliest settlement attraction, which was later renamed Filinto Müller after a plane crash involving the President of the Senate. On September 14, 1983, Filinto Müller was elevated to a district of Paragominas, and on May 1, 1988, state law No. 5,450 approved municipal emancipation following a local plebiscite.

The local economy features an active commercial and service sector driven by wood sales, seeds, straw, and guava. The municipality is the second most populous within the Microregion of Paragominas, holding a medium Human Development Index of approximately 0.615. Deforestation concerns emerged during the timber cycle and subsequent decades, leading to federal inclusion on deforestation monitoring lists in 2008 and subsequent environmental management efforts involving the Instituto de Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amazônia supported by grants from the Brazilian Development Bank. Additionally, Dom Eliseu participated in regional political movements, including the 2011 plebiscite regarding the creation of the state of Carajás.
