01 · Overview

Colombo, in brief

Colombo is Sri Lanka's executive and judicial capital, as well as the country's most populous city. Located on the west coast of the island, the municipal limits contain 752,993 residents, while the metropolitan area is estimated to hold a population of 5.6 million.

A major historical turning point arrived in 1815 when Sri Lanka was ceded to the British Empire, establishing Colombo as the capital of the island. This capital status was retained when independence was gained in 1948. Decades later, in 1978, administrative functions began moving to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, leading to Colombo's designation as the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.

The city's urban geography and administrative layout reflect centuries of shifting colonial influences. Early Portuguese explorers arrived in 1505 and subsequently built a fortified trading post in 1517. The Dutch later captured the territory in 1656 after an epic siege. When the British took control of the entire island following the Kandyan convention in 1815, they expanded civilian construction beyond the military fort. Today, the area remains divided into 15 numbered postal and administrative divisions, ranging from the business district of Colombo 1 (Fort) to the administrative functions of Colombo 7.

As the island's primary financial centre and international gateway, the city features prominent landmarks such as the 65-hectare Beira Lake in its heart and the Kelani River along its northern border. Local governance is managed through a mayor-council system where the National People's Power won local elections.
