01 · Overview

Rechytsa, in brief

Rechytsa is a town located in the Gomel Region of Belarus, functioning as the administrative center of Rechytsa District. Situated on the Rechytsa River near its confluence with the Dnieper, the municipality maintains a population of 64,733 as of 2025.

What origins and medieval frontier defenses marked the town?

Rechytsa ranks among the oldest towns in Belarus, with local settlements dating back to the Mesolithic epoch between the ninth and fifth centuries B.C. The Dregovichi tribe subsequently inhabited the region before the settlement was first documented in the Novgorod chronicle in 1213 as part of the Principality of Chernigov. Over subsequent centuries, governance shifted through Kiev and Turov Grand Dukes, followed by annexation into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the reign of Gediminas between 1311 and 1341, and integration into the Polish-Lithuanian union starting in 1385. Along with Orsha, Shklow, Mogilev, Stary Bychaw, and Rahachow, Rechytsa formed part of a developed frontier defense system along the Dnieper River. Grand Duke Vytautas, during his 1392 to 1430 reign, erected a fortified five-tower castle within the old downtown area. The fortifications eventually expanded to include three lines featuring water trenches, ramparts, and bastions.

How did subsequent conflicts and governance transform the settlement?

Sigismund II Augustus granted the town partial Magdeburg rights in 1561, after which it functioned as a county seat in the Minsk Voivodeship within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Cossack war of 1648 to 1651 brought near-total destruction. Following the Truce of Andrusovo, control returned to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth until the Second Partition of Poland in 1793 led to Russian annexation and its designation as an uyezd seat in the Minsk Governorate. Rechytsa experienced multiple occupation phases and military conflicts across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including the Napoleonic Wars in 1812, the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1922, occupation by Central Powers in 1917 and 1918, temporary Polish control in 1920, and incorporation into the Soviet Union in 1922. During World War II, German forces occupied the town from 23 August 1941 until 1943 or 1944, operating a Nazi prison and liquidating a ghetto holding 3,000 Jewish residents in November 1941.
