01 · Overview

Cairns, in brief

Cairns is a city located on the tropical northeast coast of Far North Queensland, Australia, operating within the Australia/Brisbane timezone. Positioned at latitude -16.92366 and longitude 145.76613, the regional center sits within the state of Queensland and recorded a population of 153,075 residents.

Geographically, the city provides direct access to two prominent UNESCO world heritage sites: the Great Barrier Reef, recognized as one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and the Daintree Rainforest as part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland. Prior to British settlement, the local area was inhabited by the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people, who refer to the location in the local Yidiny language as Gimuy. From 1770 to the early 1870s, the British referred to the region simply as Trinity Bay, before it was officially named in late 1876 in honour of William Cairns, the then Governor of Queensland.

The geography of the surrounding territory originally consisted predominantly of mangrove swamps and sand ridges, which required extensive clearing and filling by laborers using dried mud, sawdust from local sawmills, and ballast from a quarry at Edge Hill. Situated on the tropical coast, the city features major transport links including Cairns International Airport, the seventh-busiest airport in Australia, alongside maritime facilities at Cairns Seaport and the Cairns Wharf Complex serving both domestic and international markets.
