01 · History

How La Rioja took shape

La Rioja is an autonomous community and province located in Spain. Its capital and largest city is Logroño, and the region covers part of the Ebro valley toward the north and the Iberian Range in the south.

During Roman times, the territory was inhabited by the Berones, Autrigones, and Vascones tribes as part of Hispania Tarraconensis. Following the Muslim invasion of AD 711, the area fell into the domains of Al Andalus before being largely reconquered in 923 by Sancho I of Pamplona. The region subsequently experienced centuries of territorial disputes between the kingdoms of Navarre and Castile, briefly forming the independent Kingdom of Viguera from 970 to about 1005. Control shifted definitively to Castile in the medieval era, reinforced by the importance of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route crossing the River Ebro via the Puente de Piedra.

Historically divided between the provinces of Burgos and Soria from the eighteenth century, the territory saw the creation of the province of Logroño in 1833. The name was changed to La Rioja in 1980 as a prelude to its constitution under a single provincial autonomous community in 1982, organized into 174 municipalities.

03 · Overview

La Rioja, in brief

La Rioja is an autonomous community and province located in Spain. Its capital and largest city is Logroño, and the territory spans from part of the Ebro valley in the north to the Iberian Range in the south.

Daily movement throughout the region involves populations traversing its 174 municipalities. Nearly half of the citizens live in the capital city of Logroño. Infrastructure connects local populations across the area, which is organized as a single province without a provincial deputation. The territory shares borders with the Basque Country to the north, Navarre to the northeast, Aragón to the southeast, and Castilla y León to the west and south.

Daily routines are shaped by the geography of seven river valleys situated between the Tirón and Alhama rivers, which flow into the Ebro. The area is well known for its wines under the brand Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja. Agricultural and commercial activities reflect the historical settlement patterns established across the central country of the Berones, the upper country of the Autrigones, and the lower country of the Vascones during Roman times.

Educational and professional transit occurs within the community through institutions such as the University of La Rioja and the International University of La Rioja. Daily academic movement engages students across public, subsidized, and private schools, supported by regional educational frameworks that include the ESO title and bachillerato programs.

Daily transit routes also link municipalities characterized by varying demographic distributions, where men outnumber women in 156 of the municipalities, while the capital accommodates the largest concentration of residents, including a female population that exceeds the male count by 8,453 inhabitants. Immigrants arriving from countries such as Morocco, Colombia, Romania, Ecuador, and Pakistan participate in the daily economic and social life of the autonomous community, contributing to the demographic composition of the region's towns and cities.
