01 · Overview

José C. Paz, in brief

José C. Paz

José C. Paz is a city located in the Buenos Aires province of Argentina, operating within the America/Argentina/Buenos_Aires timezone. Positioned at coordinates -34.51541 and -58.76813, the urban center supports a population of 230,208 residents.

The city shares its name with José Clemente Paz, born on October 2, 1842, in Buenos Aires. He was an Argentine politician, diplomat, and journalist who founded La Prensa on October 18, 1869. His early life was shaped by internal conflict when civil war forced him to move to Rosario, where at age 16 he shouted ¡Viva Buenos Aires! before diving into the Paraná River to swim back to Admiral Murature's squadron. He later enlisted under Bartolomé Mitre, fought in the Battle of Pavón in 1860, and aligned with Adolfo Alsina while studying law.

Cultural exchange and international migration pathways are woven deeply into the linguistic and historical identity of the region, where residents utilize several languages including Argentine Spanish (es-AR), English, Italian, German, French, and Guaraní (gn). During his lifetime, José C. Paz engaged extensively with European spheres, serving as a diplomatic representative to Madrid from 1883 to 1885 and to Paris from 1885 to 1893. He eventually relocated to Monte Carlo in 1900 and commissioned French architect Louis Sortais to design a grand palace in the Retiro area of Buenos Aires, a project initiated in 1902.

Beyond diplomacy and publishing, Paz organized relief efforts for yellow fever victims in 1871 and established the Society for the Protection of Invalids during the 1865 War of the Triple Alliance, funding these medical corps partly through the publication El inválido argentino. Following his death in Monaco on March 10, 1912, his remains were placed in a grand mausoleum in La Recoleta Cemetery featuring a sculpture by French artist Jules-Felix Coutan. Further details regarding the municipality are documented on the José C. Paz Wikipedia entry.
