Operating within the America/Argentina/Buenos_Aires timezone and using the ARS currency, the area functions through commercial diversity supported by multilingual communities speaking Spanish (es-AR), English, Italian, German, French, and Guaraní.

A historical turning point for the local economy occurred during the 1910s and 1920s, when the territory surrounding Corrientes avenue transformed into the central hub of the Buenos Aires garment trade. This industrial shift attracted segments of the Arab and Armenian communities alongside the established Jewish community. Over subsequent decades, commercial sectors expanded further. By the late 1970s, Balvanera established itself as a favored location for electronics import shops, which began operating alongside traditional fabric and garment businesses. Commerce along Belgrano avenue developed a lively furniture trade, while newly arrived Korean and Chinese immigrants subsequently emerged as a strong presence across multiple fields of local commerce within the district.

02 · Overview

Balvanera, in brief

Balvanera is a neighborhood, or barrio, located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Situated to the west of downtown Buenos Aires, this densely populated district is home to 152,198 inhabitants who largely reside in apartment buildings erected on small lots.

The history of Balvanera includes several pivotal turning points that transformed the area from a rural outskirt into an urban hub. Toward the middle of the eighteenth century, the lands belonged to a Spaniard nicknamed Miserere. On July 2, 1807, the zone served as a battleground during the second British invasion of the River Plate, hosting the Battle of Miserere in the current Miserere square between Spanish troops under Santiago de Liniers and English forces commanded by William Beresford.

For decades, the territory functioned primarily as an outskirt characterized by small estates known as quintas. An 1836 census recorded its population at just 3,635 residents. Growth accelerated with the establishment of the parish centered around the church of Nuestra Señora de Balvanera, erected in 1831, and the 1833 installation of the Cemetery of the Dissidents, which later closed in 1892 with its burials transferred to the British Cemetery of Chacarita. Natural growth and railroad development ultimately assimilated the neighborhood directly into the city.

By the turn of the twentieth century, Balvanera was associated with violently contested elections and local brothels where the tango dance acquired its notorious erotic overtones. During the 1910s and 1920s, the territory around Corrientes avenue evolved into the center of the Jewish community of Buenos Aires and a major hub for the garment trade, attracting additional segments of the Arab and Armenian communities. Later historical developments included the tragic bombing of the AMIA community center on July 18, 1994, marking the bloodiest terror attack ever recorded on Argentine soil. In the late 1970s, the neighborhood additionally became a favored destination for electronics import shops alongside traditional textile businesses, while newly arrived Korean and Chinese immigrants established a strong commercial presence.
