01 · History

How Oran took shape

Oran

Oran is a major coastal city situated in the northwest of Algeria. It is the capital of the Oran Province and serves as the economic capital of western Algeria, acting as a principal financial, commercial, and industrial center.

The settlement was founded in 903 by the Azdadja and Ajissa Berbers of the Maghrawa confederation, after earlier Punic and Roman settlements in the region had disappeared. Throughout its history, Oran experienced rule by a succession of Arab-Berber dynasties, including the Almohad Caliph Abd al-Mu'min and the Zayyanid Dynasty of Tlemcen. Spanish forces occupied the city in 1509, and subsequent centuries involved shifting sovereignties, including reconquest by Algerian troops under the bey Mohamed el-Kebir in 1792. Following the fall of the beylik in 1831, the city came under French colonial rule, during which it functioned as the capital of the Département of Oran. During World War II, Oran was held by the Vichy government until Allied forces captured it in late 1942 during Operation Torch. Following the Algerian War and independence in 1962, the city underwent significant demographic and structural changes, including the conversion of the Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur d'Oran into a public library in 1984.

Present-day Oran functions as a major port and commercial hub supported by three universities. The urban landscape features distinct areas, including an old quarter with a casbah and an 18th-century mosque, the modern section known as La Ville Nouvelle constructed after 1831, and the historical district of Sidi El Houari containing 16th-century Spanish vestiges and the 17th-century mosque of the Pasha.

03 · Overview

Oran, in brief

Oran is a major coastal city situated in the northwest of Algeria, positioned 432 km (268 mi) west-southwest of the capital, Algiers. Serving as the capital of the Oran Province, it functions as the second-largest city in Algeria by population and stands as the second most important urban center in the country.

Following Algerian independence, Oran maintained its status as the economic capital of western Algeria, operating as the region's main financial, commercial, and industrial center. The broader metropolitan area is home to approximately 1,500,000 people, while the city proper recorded a population of 803,329 in 2008. Commercial and institutional growth extends into neighboring suburban areas such as Bir El Djir, an urban expansion located 8 km (5 mi) east of the city center with a population of 118,000 inhabitants.

Bir El Djir accommodates several vital modern economic and administrative institutions that support Oran's commercial and industrial standing. This eastern district houses the headquarters of Sonatrach's downstream activity, reflecting the city's integration with national industrial operations. Additionally, the suburb features the convention center known as the Palais des Congrès, the Court of Justice, and the National Centre of Research in Social and Cultural Anthropology. Educational and medical infrastructure in the metropolitan area further reinforces this economic activity, including the University of sciences and technology designed by Japanese architect Kenzō Tange, the Institute of medical sciences, and the Établissement Hospitalo-universitaire November 1st, 1954 hospital.
